The Defects You See Are Not Permanent
Run your hand across your vehicle’s paint in direct sunlight. If you see a web of fine lines radiating outward, circular haze patterns, or dull patches that lack the depth the rest of the finish shows, you are looking at paint defects that live in the clear coat. Swirl marks from improper washing. Random scratches from contact with bushes, shopping carts, or road debris. Oxidation from years of UV exposure. Water spot etching from Boise’s mineral-heavy irrigation water.
These defects are not part of your paint. They are damage to its surface, and in most cases, they can be corrected through controlled machine polishing. Boise Mobile Auto Detailing provides professional-grade paint correction services that systematically remove defects from your clear coat, restoring the clarity, gloss, and color depth your paint was manufactured to display.

Who It’s For
Paint correction is appropriate for any vehicle owner who cares about the visual quality of their paint. Common candidates include:
- Vehicles with visible swirl marks from years of automatic car washes
- Dark-colored cars and trucks where defects are most visible
- Pre-ceramic-coating preparation, where a flawless surface is essential for proper bonding
- Vehicles being prepared for sale where paint appearance directly affects value
- Enthusiast and collector vehicles where finish quality is a priority
- Recently purchased used vehicles with accumulated wash damage
If your paint looks dull in direct sunlight, hazy under parking lot lighting, or rough to the touch even after washing, paint correction will address the cause. Not sure if you need correction? See our guide on signs your car needs paint correction.
What’s Included
Paint Inspection
Every correction begins with a thorough inspection under high-intensity LED lighting. We examine the paint panel by panel, identifying the type, depth, and distribution of defects. We use a paint depth gauge to measure clear coat thickness across every panel. This measurement tells us how much material is available for correction and ensures we never remove more than is safe. Some panels may have been previously repainted or corrected, and the depth gauge reveals this history before we begin.
Decontamination
Before any machine work, the paint must be chemically and mechanically decontaminated. We perform a full wash, iron decontamination, and clay bar treatment to ensure no bonded particles remain on the surface. Skipping this step would drag contaminants under the polishing pad, creating new defects while trying to remove existing ones.
Correction Stages
The number of stages depends on the severity of the defects:
Single-Stage Polish — For vehicles with light swirl marks, minor marring, and overall dullness. A single pass with a finishing polish on a medium-cut pad removes the top layer of damage and restores a uniform gloss. This is appropriate for well-maintained vehicles that need refreshing, or for lighter paint colors where defects are less pronounced.
Two-Stage Correction — For vehicles with moderate swirl marks, light scratches, and uneven gloss. The first stage uses a cutting compound on a firm pad to level the clear coat and remove deeper defects. The second stage uses a finishing polish to refine the surface and eliminate any haze left by the compounding step. This is the most common correction level for daily drivers in the Boise area.
Multi-Stage Correction — For vehicles with heavy oxidation, deep scratches, water spot etching, or severe neglect. This involves multiple compounding passes with progressively finer combinations of pad and product, followed by one or more polishing stages. Each pass is inspected under LED lighting before moving to the next. This level of correction is time-intensive and typically reserved for vehicles where the owner wants a near-flawless result.
Panel Wipe
Between stages and after the final polish, we perform an IPA (isopropyl alcohol) panel wipe. This strips away polishing oils and fillers that can temporarily mask remaining defects. The panel wipe reveals the true condition of the paint, ensuring that what you see is actual correction, not a temporary cosmetic improvement.

Our Process
-
Consultation and Inspection — We assess your paint under LED lighting, measure clear coat depth, and discuss your goals. We recommend the appropriate correction level based on what we find.
-
Wash and Decontamination — Full hand wash, iron removal, and clay bar treatment.
-
Masking — Trim, rubber seals, and badges are masked with painter’s tape to protect against accidental contact with the polisher.
-
Test Spot — We correct a small area on one panel to confirm the pad and product combination that will be most effective for your specific paint type and condition.
-
Systematic Correction — Each panel is corrected individually, inspected under LED lighting, and panel-wiped before moving to the next section. We work in controlled, overlapping passes.
-
Final Inspection — The completed vehicle is inspected under multiple light sources to confirm uniform correction across all panels.
-
Protection — After correction, the freshly leveled clear coat must be protected. We can apply a sealant, or if you have opted for ceramic coating, the surface is now in ideal condition for that application.
Why Paint Correction Matters in Idaho
Boise’s climate is harder on automotive paint than most owners realize. Summer UV exposure at our elevation is intense and accelerates oxidation. Winter road treatments — salt and magnesium chloride — leave corrosive residue. Hard water from sprinkler systems etches into clear coat if not removed promptly. And the ubiquitous automatic car washes throughout the valley introduce new swirl marks with every visit.
Paint correction addresses the accumulated result of these conditions. More importantly, when followed by a quality sealant or ceramic coating, it establishes a surface that is significantly easier to maintain going forward.
Protecting Your Investment
Paint correction removes a small, measured amount of clear coat to eliminate defects. It is not something to be done carelessly or frequently. Once corrected, the priority shifts to protecting that result. We recommend either a high-grade synthetic sealant or a ceramic coating to preserve the corrected finish. Combined with proper washing technique and regular maintenance, a single correction can last years.
